The other war escalates as the insurgency in Iraq gathers in momentum. Over two hundred US soldiers are killed in action over the summer months. Young men and women; sons and daughters of parents somewhere in what the US military refers to as ‘CONUS’ or the ‘Continental United States.’ Their bodies transit home through Irish airspace. Dead Americans, dead kids criss-crossing Irish skies while we go about our business below. Oblivious. Tens of thousands of Iraqi men, women and children are also slaughtered in the quagmire. I continue to write analysis for the Irish Times. ‘Mission Accomplished’ morphs into ‘Mission Impossible’.

Towards the end of November I deliver an academic paper in the University of Sussex on the ‘Political Economy of War Reporting’. It seems like a topical issue since Britain is at war. The audience of young students seem to have only a passing interest in the war. One asks me who Osama Bing Laden is.

On the way home, Aideen texts me. We are pregnant again. I immediately think of Liadain. At 38,000 feet on the short flight home to Dublin, I look out the window at the stars winking in the night sky. I think of her out there somewhere in the inky black. I pray that she watches over her new baby sibling. I pray that all will be well.
